The Pop Show, a new concert series celebrating the nexus of Broadway and pop culture, will kick off on Monday, May 27, 2013 with a 7pm concert of songs from the Elton John catalog. A new concert with a different musical theme will be presented each month as part of the Broadway at Birdland series at Birdland Jazz Club.
The announcement was made today by John Capo, the creator and producer of The Pop Show. The Broadway at Birdland series is presented by Jim Caruso.
Each month, under the music direction of Brandon Sturiale, inimitable and incomparable performers from the worlds of pop culture and Broadway collide with the pulsating Pop Show Band and Singers to present rare, unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime singer-song pairings from an array of music artists and genres. Surprise guests, audience giveaways and delirious musical merriment make The Pop Show New York's newest and most unpredictable ongoing music event.
The May edition of The Pop Show centers on the iconic songs of Elton John. Featuring the soul-searching ballads, the most rockin' uptempos and everything in between, proceeds from the Elton John show benefit The Trevor Project, an organization focused on suicide prevention in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning communities.
Scheduled performers include Tony Award winner Len Cariou (Sweeney Todd, Applause, A Little Night Music), Natalie Douglas (7-time MAC Award-Winning Vocalist), Van Hughes (American Idiot, 9 to 5, Hairspray), Christopher Jackson (In The Heights, Memphis), Kyle Dean Massey (Next to Normal, Wicked, Altar Boyz), Leslie McDonel (American Idiot, Hairspray), Jarrod Spector (Jersey Boys, Les Miserables) and Daniel Quadrino (Bye Bye Birdie), with additional names to be announced.
Each edition of The Pop Show also features the pulsating Pop Show Band and Singers, a group of eight singers and musicians who accompany the performers to create a unique and intense auditory experience. The Pop Show Band and Singers features Mike Rosengarten,Cody Owen Stine, Brandon Sturiale, Adam Wolfe, Melanie Brook, Melanie Burg, Clint Carter and Eric Day.
Future editions of The Pop Show will feature a variety of pop music artists and themes, from motown to hip hop, 70s soul to 80s glam to 90s grunge and everything in between.
