Cabaret Photographers: Matt Baker
A look at and a thank you to the photographers who give Broadway World Cabaret their artistry.

It has been the custom, over at Broadway World Cabaret, to run an article once a week, showcasing the activities at the recurring variety show THE LINEUP WITH Susie Mosher, over at Birdland Theater - we call the article a "Photo Flash" around our office. At the start of each week, one of Susie's documentarians sends over the photos they did of the show the week before and we are good to go. The most frequent of Susie's photographers has been Matt Baker, and each time that I opened a transfer from Matt, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. Matt Baker, you see, is a genius, and being allowed to sort through his folder of three to six hundred photographs was a privilege. Whenever I went through those folders of photos, I felt like one of those museum curators who wears gloves and handles the art in the rooms where we are not allowed to be. And each week, as I went through those photos, the number cannot be counted of times that I said, "Boy. I wish I had taken that picture."
Matt Baker always goes a little bit further in the quest to make art. Whether he is capturing a simple moment in the Green Room backstage, snapping a pose in front of the Step And Repeat, or taking a moment in time from the stage, he will always find the most interesting angle, the tenderest emotion, the most theatrical performance, and the most creative post-production treatment. The result is a folder on my computer of thousands and thousands of Matt Baker photos, and at least a hundred that made me say, "I wish I had taken that picture."
These are some of those wishes.

About Matt Baker:
Matt Baker is a portrait photographer and professional jazz musician. Commissioned work includes headshots, portraits, live concerts, video production, and more.
His studio also has a beautiful black grand piano (great for a music video too), located on New York's Upper West Side. Shoots can be outdoors, at a location of your choice, or indoors in the studio space. Matt himself is a professional jazz pianist, performing a busy schedule in New York and touring abroad, loves coffee, scuba diving, and astrophotography. Originally from Australia has lived in NYC 12 years now.
