The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel has announced the Café Carlyle's fall 2015 season, which features the venue debuts of the Broadway veteran Brian Stokes Mitchell, who kicks off the season, and jazz vocalist Kurt Elling; as well as the return of audience favorites Buster Poindexter (aka David Johansen), Alexa Ray Joel, John Pizzarelli & Jessica Molaskey, and Steve Tyrell.
Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell makes his Café debut in Plays With Music, September 15-26. The all-new show features Broadway favorites, standards and jazz filled with beauty, joy, whimsy, romance and of course, his inspired vocal interpretations. Stephen Holden of The New York Times recently said that Stokes "brings an unprecedented fusion of theatrical heroism, pop-jazz sizzle and emotional vulnerability" and that he has "revealed an expressive fearlessness that among male pop singers has been matched only by Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles." He will be accompanied by a trio led by his long-time pianist and collaborator, Tedd Firth with Gary Haase on bass and Mark McLean on drums.
Buster Poindexter, the elegant, crooning alterego of seminal rocker and founding member of the New York Dolls David Johansen, returns to the Café with a brand new show September 29-October 10. His previous shows have been called "one the of the most satisfying musical acts you're likely to encounter in New York" (Theatermania), with The Hollywood Reporter writing, Johansen "seems to be born for a room as intimate as this one."
GRAMMY Award-winner Kurt Elling is among the world's foremost jazz vocalists; winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll for fourteen consecutive years and named "Male Singer of the Year" by the Jazz Journalists Association eight times in that same span. The Washington Post says, "Since the mid-1990s, no singer in jazz has been as daring, dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling. With his soaring vocal flights, his edgy lyrics and sense of being on a musical mission, he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz." Elling makes his Carlyle debut, October 13-17, in a five-night run of Elling Swings Sinatra, his homage to the legendary male vocalist in celebration of Sinatra's centenary.
Singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel brings her unique artistry back to the Café for the fourth time a two-week run of shows, October 20-31. Reviewing last year's engagement at the Café, The New York Times called Joel, daughter of music legend Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, "a singer following her own heart," adding, "Her original work... is firmly grounded in a pop tradition in which streams converge, from gospel to Tin Pan Alley. The songs are bluntly melodic, lyrically direct and catchy."
Husband-and-wife duo John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey make their annual fall pilgrimage to The Carlyle with an all-new show, November 3-28. They return following their hit show Grownup Songs, which was named one of TIME's Top 10 Plays & Musicals of 2014, and prompted The New York Times to call them "the supreme nightclub act of our time."
GRAMMY Award-winner Steve Tyrell celebrates his 11th anniversary performing in Café Carlyle's revered holiday slot, having taken over for the legendary Bobby Short in 2005, with an all-new show. Of last year's residency, Will Friedwald of Wall Street Journal declared, "whenever he sings, it feels like home." The five-week engagement runs December 1-January 2.
Throughout the season, Woody Allen will continue to perform Monday nights with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band.
