Baby Jane Dexter returns to Metropolitan Room for a special summer encore engagement celebrating the release of her new live CD, "The Real World" on Quannacut Records.
This show, which enjoyed a sold out run in November and December 2010, has been hailed by many critics as her finest show to date by this beloved artist who continues to top herself in what is one of the greatest comebacks in the history of night life. Her acclaimed, long time musical partner Ross Patterson will again be her musical director. Opening tonight, July 8 at 7:00pm, the show will run two consecutive weekends on Fridays and Saturdays through July 16. There will be a $25 music charge and a two-drink minimum. The Metropolitan Room is located at 34 West 22nd Street (between 5th & 6th Avenues.) Reservations and further information: (212) 206 0440.
The Real World is a powerful, inspiring and funny potpourri of unique songs and arrangements given Ms. Dexter's one of a kind haunting spin. The eclectic song list includes gems by the likes of Billie Holiday, Janis Ian, Roy Orbison, John Sebastian, Alec Wilder and many more. Writing in The New York Times, Stephen Holden said of Ms. Dexter, "The phrase 'keeping it real,' and all that it suggests certainly applies to Baby Jane Dexter, a longtime cabaret performer whose booming pop contralto is one of the more formidable voices on the New York nightclub stage." Additionally, Jazz Times Magazine said, "Dexter's brand of entertainment is arguably the most compellingly, refreshingly honest there is." And, this new show will contain some potent musical moments along with her trademark blend of profound and artistically whimsical bon mots. As always, Baby Jane challenges as much as she inspires. That is the hallmark that has sustained her remarkable career. Ms. Dexter said, "I'm very excited with the release of this album. So many people were touched by the show that we were compelled to release a live CD."
This is Ms. Dexter's sixth CD. The winner of many honors, she has received the triple crown in cabaret having been honored by Back Stage with two Bistro awards, the Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs (MAC) with six awards and the 2009 and 2010 Nightlife Award.
The album will be available at Amazon.com, CD Baby and iTunes. It will also be available at www.babyjanedexter.com and available after all performances.
