Back in early 2013, veteran cabaret performer and actress Barbara Porteus presented a show at Don't Tell Mama called Up On The Roof, a celebratory recollection of her youth through adulthood, while spanning 40 years of pop music including Carol King and Joni Mitchell to John Mayer and Adelle. The show wowed audiences and critics. BroadwayWorld.com said, "Porteus' decision to employ an all strings band was inspired . . . this was a cabaret ride I was sorry to see end."
Cabaret Scenes Magazine wrote: "Porteus has an expressive, buttery voice. Vocal subtlety and control are impressive . . . This singer communicates."
Three years later, Porteus is bringing back Up On The Roof to the Metropolitan Room as the June 2016 installment of Producer Stephen Hanks' monthly series, New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits (Associate Producer, Fr. Jeffrey Hamblin, MD). Porteus' all-strings band features Award-winning Jack Cavari as Musical Director, arranger, and lead guitarist, with Larry Saltzman on guitar and Zev Katz on bass.
Barbara Porteus has also performed in national tours of The Sound Of Music with Marie Osmond and Fiddler On The Roof with Jan Peerce as well as regional productions of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying with Donald O'Connor, Wizard Of Oz with Phyllis Diller, Peter Pan with B.D. Wong and David Ogden Stiers, and The Music Man with Gary Sandy.
In 2009, Porteus released her debut CD Barbara Porteus and was hailed by NitelifeExchange.com for possessing " . . . the crystal soprano of a Julie Andrews, the folk leanings of the Joni Mitchell material, and a warm and inviting sound that is really all her own to hold it all together."
In 2014 and 2015, Porteus was one of the featured singers in the cabaret show revue Salute to Singer/Songwriters of the 1970s, performed at Urban Stages and the Rosen Performing Arts Center in Wayne, New Jersey.
