Australian cabaret performer, Analisa Bell, brings her Billie Holiday tribute, Strange Fruit, to the Metropolitan Room on Thursday, June 30 at 9.30pm.
Hot off the heels of performing in Gotta Have Faith, a tribute to her mentor Faith Prince, which she performed at The Duplex last Tuesday night, Bell is now rehearsing Strange Fruit with pianist Karen Dryer, sax player Aaron Irwin and double bass player, Genevieve Chapin. She first performed the show in her native Perth, Australia, to glowing reviews before bringing the show to NYC's The Duplex in 2012, after participating in the International Cabaret Conference at Yale. She is excited to bring the show to life once again, this time making a return to the Metropolitan Room after making her debut at the venue last year, in Perthonality.
Bell says she has Ms Prince to thank for encouraging the move to New York. "I first met Faith at Yale. When she came to Australia in 2014 to tour with Anthony Warlow, we caught up for drinks and she said, "Honey, you gotta come to the States" and I said, "I wanna come to the States", and she said, "Well, let's make it happen" and the rest is history!
Bell is no stranger to the cabaret stage having been a featured regular at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne and at Downstairs at the Maj, Perth's premier cabaret venue. She has performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Short + Sweet Cabaret, Sydney Cabaret Showcase, and Perth's Fringe World Festival. She also won last year's Shana Farr Cabaret Competition at the Annual Broadway Spring Festival.
Bell graduated from the Certificate of Music Theatre course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2000. Since then, she has performed in various musical and theatre productions, including Oklahoma! (IAJ International), Les Miserables (Regal Theatre), Putting It Together(Subiaco Arts Centre), Pirates of Penzance (His Majesty' Theatre), and The Vagina Monologues (Playlovers), for which she won the 2007 ITA Best Actress award.
"Entertaining and moving, Analisa Bell pays loving and respectful tribute to the life and music of the legendary Lady Day in Strange Fruit... she produced captivating vocals and an impressive, sustained delivery... She channeled the spirit of the subject, showing an exquisite sensibility... Rating: Four stars" - Artshub Australia
