Alec Mapa is a GLAAD award winning actor, playwright, comedian, and journalist. With hilarious live performances, ground breaking television roles, and thought provoking columns in The Advocate, Alec has entertained audiences around the world in every imaginable medium. Not content with four job titles, Alec is also an avid fundraiser and activist for a myriad of organizations that benefit the GLBT community. It's been a big year for Alec. Currently he recurs on two ABC mega hits Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives. Desperate Housewives fans know him as Gabriella Solis' pal, Vern, and this season he joined the Ugly Betty cast as star fashion reporter, Suzuki St. Pierre. Movie audiences will see Alec opposite Adam Sandler in the Judd Apatow Robert Smigel comedy You Don't Mess With The Zohan premiering in 2008. In addition Alec completed an indie film about the forming of Gay /Straight Alliances in high schools called Tru Loved, also premiering in 2008. Reality shows have also made use of Alec's quick wit this year as he has completed hosting duties on two brand new shows: Alec now serves as host for LOGO's groundbreaking transgender dating show TransAmerican Love Story and VH-1 also tapped Alec this year as quiz master for their brand new game show The Smartest Celebrity. With this many projects currently on air, or about to appear in theaters, Alec is definitely one to watch. Audiences first discovered Alec on Broadway in the Tony Award winning production of M. Butterfly.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1991 Alec has said, "I couldn't get a part in my hair." He turned this unfortunate turn into his one man show I Remember Mapa. Produced by the Mark Taper Forum, I Remember Mapa won the LA Weekly Award for Best Solo Performance and has since played to sold-out houses across the country. The industry took notice and Alec went on to guest star on over 40 television series, including Alias, Friends, Dharma and Greg, Roseanne, The Jamie Foxx Show, Seinfeld and NYPD Blue. In 2001 Alec made television history by playing network television's very first Gay Asian series regular role on the short lived CBS sitcom Some Of My Best Friends. He then starred in four seasons of the UPN sitcom Half and Half. Film audiences howled at Alec's scene stealing turn as "N'Cream" in the wildly popular drag queen musical Connie and Carla. He appears in two upcoming independent films Dirty Laundry and Tru Loved. Alec's Wisecrack comedy special premiered on LOGO in 2005.
His stand-up special has since gained a huge cult following becoming one of the networks most popular downloads on itunes. His comedy is additionally featured in the award winning documentary Laughing Matters: The Men also airing on LOGO. Throughout the year Alec has entertained live audiences with Rosie O'Donnell on her "R Family Cruises" and on the Atlantis Cruise lines. Other Broadway credits include the National Actor's Theater productions of A Little Hotel On the Side and Timon Of Athens. Off-Broadway Alec appeared in the critically acclaimed New York Shakespeare/Public Theater productions of A Language Of Their Own and Dogeaters.
For his performance in The East West players production Whitelands Alec won the LA Ovation Award for Best Leading Actor. Alec has long been a frequent host, performer and tireless fundraiser for East West Players, Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team, AIDS Project Los Angeles, Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Social Services (GLASS) The Matthew Shepard Foundation and The Human Rights Campaign. For his activism Alec has received awards from The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Alec was awarded the prestigious Davidson Valentini GLAAD Award for promoting visibility and working on behalf of GLBT causes. Alec is a regular contributor to "The Advocate" where his column "Minority Retort" has been a feature since 2003. Alec is married and lives in Los Angeles with his husband, Jamison Hebert, and their dog, Ozzy.
