La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club presents Abigail Nessen Bengson's whirlwind one-act solo performance, The Magic Show: The Story of the Barefoot Angels, at their downtown theater (74A East 4th Street) for a strictly limited engagement beginning Friday, April 10th. Performances run weekends through April 19th.
"The Magic Show: The Story of the Barefoot Angels" is the story of two American communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast and a volcano eruption in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Abigail Nessen Bengson channels the voices of six good-hearted and passionate characters who dance, weep, laugh, share their stories, tell dirty jokes and sing music from old-time 12-bar blues to Salvadoran hip-hop and zydeco. This one-woman show features live music by "one man band" Shaun Bengson.
Abigail Nessen Bengson premiered her first one-woman show, "Anthem," at the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in 2004. Her latest work, "The Magic Show," was first seen in April 2008 at Eve Ensler's Women Center Stage Festival at the Culture Project in NYC. Abigail appeared to critical acclaim in 2006 in the off-Broadway musical revue "BUSH WARS: A Musical Revenge." Abigail has performed original solo works with the Royal Shakespeare Company, New York Hip-Hop Theater Festival, and the Apollo New Works Festival, and has performed as a hip-hop artist in venues across New York City, through which she earned two clothing sponsorships. Abigail continues to teach and perform internationally in orphanages and refugee camps and sends gratitude and love to the Barefoot Angels of El Salvador. She is a founding member of the rock group, Zombie Nationalists with her husband, Shaun Bengson.
Shaun Bengson is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, composer, and actor who has performed in venues across the Midwest and East Coast, including the off-Broadway premiere of "The Magic Show" at Eve Ensler's Women Center Stage Festival at the Culture Project in NYC.
