Bookwriter and composer-lyricist Michael R. Jackson takes us on a concert-style jaunt through his self-referential concept musical A STRANGE LOOP. The show plays Feinstein's/54 Below (254 West 54th Street) tonight, April 26.
The show follows Usher, a black, gay musical theater writer who works as an usher in the back of the house at a long-running Broadway show, while he simultaneously struggles through a draft of A STRANGE LOOP, a self-referential concept musical about a black gay musical theater writer who works as an usher in the back of the house at a long-running Broadway show.
Michael R. Jackson holds a BFA in playwriting from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts' Dramatic Writing Program and an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from the Tisch School's Musical Theatre Writing Program. As a songwriter, he has seen his work performed at Merkin Hall, The Barrington Stage Company, The Laurie Beechman Theater, The Triad, Ars Nova, Joe's Pub, The Metropolitan Room, The Bruno Walter Library at Lincoln Center, and ACT in Seattle. He wrote book and lyrics on the musical Only Children with composer Rachel Peters and is currently writing a musical adaptation of the 2007 film Teeth with co-bookwriter and composer, Anna Jacobs.
Featuring Elijah Caldwell, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Derrick Cobey, Nathan Lee Graham, Larry Hamilton, Darius Anthony Harper, James Jackson Jr., Marcus Paul James, John-Andrew Morrison, Larry Owens, Cartreze Tucker, Jamaal Clark Turpin, Jason Veasey, and Reggie D. White. Adam Wiggins is the Music Director/Band Arranger. The show will be directed by Stephen Brackett. Notably, the show about what it means to be a gay black male artist will be collaborated on by 14 gay black male artists.
