newportFILM and Child & Family have teamed-up to co-host an exciting event to benefit both organizations. Scheduled for Thursday, June 27th at the Casino Theater, this joint benefit will include a cocktail party and screening of the groundbreaking film, Girl Rising. Directed by Academy Award nominee, Richard Robbins, Girl Rising tells the stories of 9 extraordinary girls from 9 countries. It is written by 9 celebrated writers and narrated by 9 renowned actresses, including Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. The film showcases the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world.

The film screening will be introduced by Lauren Mitte, Director of Global Engagement for Girl Rising. Lauren will also be available during the post-film cocktail hour to answer questions. Additionally, there will be a silent auction sponsored by StyleWeek Northeast. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on custom-made outfits created by some of New England's top fashion designers. These one-of-a-kind garments will reflect the culture and beauty of one of the nine countries depicted in the film- including Haiti, Cambodia, Nepal, Egypt, Peru, Ethiopia and Afghanistan. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share the powerful message of this film here in Newport, as it speaks to our societal beliefs about education," stated Teresa Conners, Executive Director of newportFILM. She added that the film "brings the inequality of education around the world to the forefront of discussion."

This event marks the first collaboration between Child & Family and newportFILM. This partnership is something both organizations are excited about and hope to see more of in Newport's nonprofit community. "Our organizations impact Newport County residents in distinctly different ways, but our goals are very similar - we support the community in a positive and meaningful way," stated Keith Tavares, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Child & Family. Along with the joint efforts of both organizations, this event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Lila Delman Real Estate, Horan Construction, KVH Industries, Webster Bank, Pranzi Catering, Spada Media and Jonathan Edwards Winery. Although a formal name has not been given to the co-hosted event, it is viewed as "Opening Night" in advance of Child & Family's annual benefit Runway Show with StyleWeek Northeast scheduled for the following evening at Ochre Court Mansion. "It is going to be a busy and exciting two days for us," Tavares added.
