getTV will air a marathon of six back-to-back episodes of the exciting 1970s action drama series "S.W.A.T." on Sunday, October 29 beginning at 8 PM ET/7 C, in advance of the series reboot premiering Thursday, November 2 on CBS.
Jeff Meier, General Manager and SVP, Programming for getTV said, "With its nail-biting excitement, 'S.W.A.T.' has really endured over the years, and in anticipation of its latest network incarnation, we thought it would be fun to present a "S.W.A.T.-athon" of some of the best episodes of the original series to whet everyone's appetites."
The original show, which was first introduced as a two-hour episode of the
ABC series "The Rookies" in February 1975 and ran for two seasons, starred Steve Forrest, Robert Urich, Rod Perry, Mark Shera and James Coleman as the members of a fictional Special Weapons and Tactics team responsible for planning and carrying out dangerous missions often involving surprise assaults on armed criminals in highly charged situations.
The series' theme song, "Theme from S.W.A.T." was covered by the disco-funk band Rhythm Heritage and became a number one hit single on the Billboard Top 100 for one week on February 28, 1976. While many TV series theme songs have made the charts, only six others have reached the top position: "The Beverly Hillbillies," three weeks in 1963; "Welcome Back, Kotter," one week in 1976; "The Dukes of Hazzard, "one week in 1980; "Miami Vice," one week in 1985; "The Heights," one week in 1992; "Friends," 8 weeks in 1995.
getTV's "S.W.A.T.-athon" kicks off at 8PM ET/7 C with the series' premiere episode, "The Killing Ground," featuring guest stars Geoffrey Lewis (Clint Eastwood's sidekick in many films, including "Every Which Way But Loose") and Annette O'Toole ("Smallville," the original "It" miniseries).
• At 9:15PM ET/8:15 C, a 1975 episode, "Death Carrier" follows, with guest stars Ronne Troup (Chip Douglas' wife Polly on "My Three Sons"), Joanna Barnes ("Auntie Mame," "The Parent Trap") and David Sheiner (TV's "The Odd Couple");
• At 10:30PM ET/9:30C, a pre-Charlie's Angels Farrah Fawcett (then Farrah Fawcett-Majors) and Loni Anderson ("WKRP in Cincinatti") guest star as beauty pageant contestants in another 1975 episode, "The Steel Plated Security Blanket;"
• At 11:45 PM ET/10:45 C, "Deadly Tide," a two-part guest star-studded 1975 episode will air, featuring Susan Dey (best known as Laurie on "The Partridge Family"), Christopher George ("The Rat Patrol"), Sal Mineo (Oscar nominated for "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Exodus"), Phil Silvers ("Sgt. Bilko"), Don Stroud ("Django Unchained, "The Amityville Horror"), Lesley Ann Warren (TV's "Cinderella," Oscar nominated for "Victor Victoria") and Loni Anderson ("WKRP in Cincinatti");
• At 2:15AM ET/1:15 C, series star Robert Urich's real-life wife, Heather Menzies-Urich (who played Louisa von Trapp in 1965 film of "The Sound of Music"), guest stars in the 1975 episode, "Time Bomb;"
• The "S.W.A.T.-a-thon" concludes at 3:30AM ET/2:30AM C with another two-part episode, this one the 1976 season opener, "The Running Man," with guest stars Leslie Nielsen ("Airplane," "The Naked Gun"), Donna Mills ("Knots Landing"), Stuart Whitman (Oscar nominee for "The Mark," TV's "Cimarron Strip") and James Darren (the original Moondoggie of the "Gidget" film series, "The Time Tunnel").
Earlier on Sunday, October 29 at 6PM ET/5 C, get TV will air the two-hour 2011 made-for-video film "S.W.A.T.: Firefight," starring Gabriel Macht as a S.W.A.T. expert on a special assignment to train and certify Detroit's S.W.A.T. team who gets more than he bargained for when a vengeful government agent targets him and the team after his girlfriend is taken hostage and then killed during an assignment. Robert Patrick, Carly Pope, Giancarlo Esposito, Kristanna Loken and Matt Bushell co-star.
