Syfy has canceled Z Nation after five seasons. The December 28 season-finale will now serve as the zombie drama's series finale.

Syfy confirmed its decision to end the show after producer David Michael Latt announced the news with a video on Twitter. See the video.

The franchise will remain alive, however, as Netflix picked up the Z Nation prequel Black Summer, starring Jaime King.

Never a ratings breakout - Z Nation's most recent episode attracted only 430,000 total live-plus-same-day viewers. The drama starred Kellita Smith, DJ Qualls and Keith Allan.

In another post, Latt said, "How could we be sad when we were given so much? We were so grateful for every season Syfy said yes. Plus we have a spin off with @Netflix that u will LOVE. It's an embarrassment of riches."
