Youtube has officially ventured into paid subscription territory.
As of today, the online streaming service has launched a series of subscription-based channels, from such networks as BET and PBS, with 14-day free trial period available. After the trial, each channel is slated to cost between $.99 and $7.99. For now, YouTube is billing the change as a "pilot," with necesssary changes, additions, or tweaks on the horizons as feedback is received.
"As we roll out wider and as we roll out self-serve, you'll see a lot of innovation," Malik Ducard, director of content partnerships for YouTube, told reporters today via conference call.
As of today, paid channels include Acorn TV, Baby First PLUS, Big Think Mentor, BIGSTAR Movies, Cars.TV, Comedy.TV, and many, many more.
