Geek alert! Badass Digest reports tonight that William Shatner might return to his iconic role of Captain Kirk in STAR TREK 3, expected in 2016. The star previously complained that while Leonard Nimoy was asked to return for the newest crop of movies, that he was not. (The fact that his character is dead in the canon is something that never really mattered).

The site reports that "I have learned that the script for Star Trek 3 includes a scene that reteams Shatner and Nimoy onscreen as Kirk and Spock for THE FIRST TIME in canon since 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It would be a pretty huge moment for fans of the franchise, and likely the last time we'll ever see Shatner as James T. Kirk in official continuity."

STAR TREK 3 is scheduled to be released in 2016, in time for the franchise's 50th anniversary, with J.J. Abrams returning as producer, but not as director. The script is being written by Roberto Orci, who will also direct the film which is due to begin filming in early 2015. According to recent reports, the currently untitled film will take place in deep space, with the Enterprise and her crew dealing with an unrevealed crisis. This movie will reportedly be more similar to the original Star Trek series than its predecessors

William Shatner played James Tiberius Kirk, the captain of the "Star Trek's" U.S.S. Enterprise on the original television series and in seven Star Trek films between 1979 and 1994. He's also known as television's TJ Hooker from the series of the same name, and for his three-time Emmy award-winning role in "The Practice" and its successful spin-off "Boston Legal." Most recently, he brought "Shatner's World," a unique retrospective cinematic event, to movie theaters in April 2014. Shatner is also an avid horseman and started the Hollywood Charity Horse Show in 1990.
