Western Actor Harry Carey Jr. Dies at 91

Harry Carey Jr., a character actor who was featured in many Western films, including 3 GODFATHERS, has deid at age 91, the Associated Press has reported.

Melinda Carey, his daughter, confirmed that he died Thursday of natural causes. He was surrounded by family in Santa Barbara, CA.

"He went out as gracefully as he came in," she told AP Friday.

During his career, which spanned over five decades, Carey appeared in nearly 100 movies. Throughout his time on the big screen, he became recognized as one of Hollywood's most beloved character actors.

Included in his Western repetoir were John Ford classics such as THE SEARCHERS, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, WAGON MASTER, THE LONG GRAY LINE, and TWO RODE TOGETHER. He also appeared in GREMLINS and BACK TO THE FUTURE III.

In addition, Carey wrote a memoir entitled COMPANY OF HEROES, MY LIFE AS AN ACTOR IN THE John Ford STOCK COMPANY.

Before breaking into the industry, Carey served in the Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, his son, two daughters, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
