TVGuide.com reports that veteran news anchors Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters and Katie Couric will take turns filling in at the desk of GOOD MORNING AMERICA when host Robin Roberts takes a medical leave to undergo a bone-marrow transplate. Roberts' absence is expected to occur sometime in late August or early September.
At this morning's Television Critics Association press event, Roberts joked, "I'm not going anywhere! I'm staying right here!" At the same event, Couric confirmed the news saying, "I will be happy to help out."
GMA executive producer Tom Cibrowski, executive producer of GMA, also revealed to reporters that the hosts of The View have offered to "pitch in." as well. Kelly Ripa is reportedly under consideration to step in as a substitute anchor.
Roberts shared the news with viewers last month that she had been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a blood and bone marrow disease formerly known as preleukemia. Her sister, also a news anchor, will donate her matching bone marrow for the transplant.
