As first reported on Deadline.com, Universal is set to produce a big screen adaptation of NBC's long running series THE ROCKFORD FILES. The film will be penned by David Levien and Brian Koppelman and will feature Vince Vaughn in the title role made famous by actor James Garner.

THE ROCKFORD FILES ran on NBC from 1974-80 and featured Garner as the 'down and out' private eye who spent a few years in the San Quentin prison before being pardoned. Rockford used a mobile home in Malibu as his work and living space. He often appeared discheveled, drove a beat up car and used his charm and wit to obtain what he needed. The series was created by Roy Huggins and Stephen J. Cannell. According to the report, NBC's attempt to bring back a ROCKFORD FILES reboot has not been successful.

Vaughn recently signed on to reunite with his 'Wedding Crashers' co-star Owen Wilson for the upcoming comedy 'The Internship'. He will next be seen in Lay the Favorite.
