MTV is set to make history today at 8 a.m. ET when the nominees for the night's top prize, Video of the Year, will be unveiled exclusively on MTV's Instagram and Vine accounts. It will mark the first time an awards show has ever announced nominations through those social media platforms.
Each hour after the Video of the Year reveal,
MTV will post additional Instagram and Vine videos highlighting the nominees in other categories. It's just the latest in a series of iconic firsts for the 30th anniversary show, which will touch down in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center on August 25.
After the old-school Moonman made the trip from L.A. to New York earlier this summer to Barclays - where the VMAs will make history as the first major annual awards show to take place in the borough -- internationally famous artist and provocateur KAWS unleashed his one-time-only redesign of the show's trophy.
"It's such a strong, iconic thing. Everyone sees the Moonman and knows right off the bat what it is," KAWS told
MTV News. "When I was first invited to do the project, I knew that I didn't want to create something new entirely, I wanted [to do] something you see that's immediately KAWS and immediately Moonman; people just get it."
