When an unfaithful husband turns up dead near his car on a dirt road, detectives believed something just wasn't right. Brian Davis was a fun-loving guy, but his family said he would never take his prized vehicle on the terrain where he was murdered. Could his wife Robyn and her best friend Carol (Cissy) Salztman hold a clue? The show airs tonight, October 6th. Get a sneak peek below!
48 HOURS: "Friends for Life" is a story about a troubled marriage, the dead man's mistress and her jealous husband, as well as the victim's wife and her best friend – all of whom may have had good reason to want Brian Davis out of their lives.
Everything seemed fine when Brian and Robyn went boat shopping in Lake Charles, La., on June 29, 2009. Robyn soon got tired of looking at boats, so Brian dropped her off and switched cars to continue his search. Brian never returned home, Robyn tells Erin Moriarty. Two days later, he was found dead with his car jacked up, as if he were changing a tire. His belt was undone, his shoes were off and some – not all – of his personal belongings were gone.
"He was shot four times in the back and he didn't have a chance," Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso tells 48 HOURS. "He didn't see it coming."
Davis was an outgoing guy who also had a girlfriend on the side. In fact, while Robyn waited at home wondering where he'd gone, part of her worried he had left her for good. Brian was on his third marriage at the time, and Robyn her second. They had six children between them.
Going on their instincts, though little hard evidence, police believe the two best friends killed Brian. Robyn and Cissy are close friends, and would do anything for each other – short of murder, they tell Moriarty.
"It's unconscionable that they can do this to innocent people," Cissy says of being investigated. "Never could I have imagined this would happen to me or anyone else in America," Robyn adds about their predicament. "But I've come to realize that it can happen to anybody."
Others believe they are falsely accused. "I'm 100 percent positive that neither one of them had anything to do with Brian's death," Robyn's daughter Kelsey tells Moriarty.
What will a jury think? Moriarty also speaks with prosecutors, Brian's family and defense attorney Glen Vamvoras, who says an hour before the murder Robyn was wearing white pants and flip-flops.
"You don't plan to go kill somebody out in the boondocks in white Capri pants," Vamvoras says. "She wasn't dressed for murder, in my opinion."
