Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said that it was "surprising that there haven't been more" attacks similar to the one that took place yesterday during the Boston Marathon, in an interview that was broadcast live today, April 16, 2013 on CBS THIS MORNING (7:00-9:00AM) on the CBS Television Network.
"It really reminds us of what we knew on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. But really, the big news here is, this was a horrible attack, this was a terrible attack and my heart goes out to the people that were hurt, but it's surprising that there haven't been more of these since Sept. 11," Giuliani told co-host Charlie Rose and CBS News Senior Correspondent John Miller. Watch his appearance in full below.
Excerpts from the interview are below.
ROSE: According to Politico and the San Francisco Police Chief, this turns the clock back to 2001, I think, at least until we find out exactly what happened in Boston. So whatever the thinking was on Sept. 12 is now the thinking today.
GIULIANI: It really reminds us of what we knew on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. But really, the big news here is, this was a horrible attack, this was a terrible attack and my heart goes out to the people that were hurt, but it's surprising that there haven't been more of these since Sept. 11. We expected many attacks like this. The really remarkable story is that so many have been prevented. So the reality is that what we've been doing hasn't worked 100%, but it's worked pretty well, and now we have to learn from this so that we can prevent something like this in the future.
