In tonight's episode of the Emmy-winning weekly news magazine series VICE on HBO, correspondent Gianna Toboni investigates first-hand the shocking impact of Trump's "Global Gag Rule" on basic health care for women in Uganda, and offers a frank look into the lives bearing the brunt of the policy one year on.
Three days after his inauguration, Trump signed a memorandum reinstating the "Global Gag Rule," a policy that eliminates US development aid funding for any NGO that provides abortion-related services. In the year after Trump's signing, the effects of this policy have rippled BEYOND abortion and across Africa, limiting access to vital services including childbirth care, HIV treatment, malaria prevention, and more.
VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni travels to Uganda to better understand why the long-term effects caused by the policy, which initially received a lot of media attention, and has since quieted down despite the worsening conditions. "Global Gag Rule" will also see the policy's direct influence on the RISE of BLACK MARKET abortions, meeting an abortionist who provides miscarriage-inducing, life-threatening medicine made with bleach, detergent and soda to those without access to contraceptives.
