Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer said he made the decision to run for New York City comptroller over the weekend and he hopes voters will see him as the right person for the job in an interview that was broadcast live, today, July 8, 2013, on CBS This Morning (7:00-9:00 AM) on the CBS Television Network. "I sinned, I owned up to it, I looked them in the eye, I resigned, I held myself accountable. I think that was the only right thing to do," Spitzer told co-hosts Norah O'Donnell, Gayle King and Anthony Mason. He added, "There's a record there that I hope they will look to and say, 'yes, the comptroller's position is one that fits his skill set and we hope that we can bring him back for public service.'"

Spitzer also denied a report that he and his wife had separated, saying that his family discussed his decision to run at length. "We have discussed this, I wouldn't do it if I didn't think my family would be supportive and was with it," Spitzer said. "Politics is a contact sport. So many areas of endeavor are. This one takes a unique toll on the family. I have imposed that toll. And so I'm very conscious of that, and it's not easy."
