Below, check out the first official trailer to the Green Day musical documentary, BROADWAY IDIOT, which follows the musical AMERICAN IDIOT's journey to Broadway.

Directed by Doug Hamilton, the film's synopsis reads: "BROADWAY IDIOT follows Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong from a punk rock concert at Madison Square Garden to the opening of his musical American Idiot on Broadway - only ten blocks away, but worlds apart. From behind the curtain share in the crazy journey of turning the mega-hit album into a punk rock musical - and ultimately see how the world of theater transformed Billie Joe."

Produced by Ira Pittelman, the film's creative team includes cinematographer Dan Krauss, editor Rob Tinworth, sound designer Greg McCleary, music by Green Day, and principal cast members Billie Joe Armstrong, Michael Mayer and Tom Kitt.

Director Doug Hamilton is a veteran television journalist for CBS News 60 Minutes and PBS documentaries like Frontline, NOVA, and American Masters. Hamilton has won numerous awards including three Emmys and a George Foster Peabody. He is also the company photographer for the Atlantic Theater Company.

Nominated for three Tony Awards, AMERICAN IDIOT is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9-11 world. Through incredible spectacle, thrilling performances and with the hope embodied by a new generation, AMERICAN IDIOT has given Broadway audiences the time of their lives night after night since the musical began performances at the St. James Theatre in March 2010.

The musical features the hits "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "21 Guns," "Wake Me Up When September Ends," "Holiday" and the blockbuster title track "American Idiot" from Green Day's 2004 Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album. Also included in the score are several songs from Green Day's 2009 release "21st Century Breakdown," and an unreleased love song, "When It's Time."
