ESPN reports today that Tim Pernetti is out as the athletic director of NJ's Rutger's University. The news follows Wednesday's firing of the school's men's basketball coach Mike Rice after video revealed him shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at his players as well as using homophobic slurs. Watch the ESPN report below.
Rutger's assistant coach Jimmy Martelli, who also was featured on video demonstrating similar unacceptable behavior resigned yesterday. The videotape was obtained by "Outside the Lines" and aired on ESPN Wednesday.
Over 50 members of the Rutgers faculty had signed a letter calling for the dismissal of Pernetti for his mishandling of the unfortunate situation. Pernetti, along with university president Robert L. Barchi, initially suspended Rice for three games in December 2012 and fined him $50,000 when the behavior was brought to their attention.
"This incident will continue to hang over Rutgers like a dark cloud for weeks, months and perhaps years to come," Stephen Sweeney, the president of the state Senate said in a statement Thursday. "It seems pretty clear that things were not handled well from the start."
