Comedy icon Steve Martin and singer-songwriter Edie Brickell have recorded two albums together and won a Grammy for their American roots music. Now they team up on the new Broadway musical, Bright Star.
During their visit this morning's TODAY, Martin shared with
Savannah Guthrie that the project was inspired by a true story Brickell unearthed, of a baby who survived being thrown from a train in a suitcase. "It was essentially a whim that expanded into eight years of our lives," he explained. Watch the appearance below!

Bright Star is the "unabashedly romantic" (The New York Times) original musical that tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and '40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past - and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives.
