The new movie, 'The Islands' seems to predict the stunning Hawaii volcano eruptions with almost disturbing accuracy.
Based on the true story of Chiefess Kapiolani who descended into the active Kilauea volcano in 1821 to demonstrate her new-found faith in Christ and ushered in a new beginning in Hawaii.
"I don't think this is a coincidence," says Director Tim Chey. "There's something spiritual going on here with the story of the Chiefess coming out and the volcano erupting."
In the film, the Chiefess climbs to the top of the volcano and actually goes descends into the volcano to prove Pele the goddess did not exist. It's considered one of the greatest acts of moral courage by any world leader in history.
However, the Chiefess proclaims the volcano will erupt if certain circumstances happen almost foretelling the current eruption.
"We've had tons of people tell us the film predicted the eruption," continues Chey. "It's very eerie. We just had the premiere of the film in April and now this."
The film hits theaters nationwide in March 2019, but early screenings have been THE TALK of the town with people astounded that the film is coming out the same time the Hawaii volcano is making international headline news.
"My wife and I were right at the top of the Halema'uma'u crater during a location scout," continues Chey, "and I remember thinking what if this volcano erupted while shooting because the entire movie is about appeasing the volcano and Chiefess Kapiolani's new faith in Christ. That thought did cross my mind."
So far 'The Islands' has received high-marks from the viewers with one premiere averaging 9 out of 10 in scores. The film has received a lot of positive media attention for using Native Hawaiians/Polynesians in the lead roles.
"We're screening the film all over the country," says Chey, "and it shows the incredible courage this Chiefess showed in light of this enormously dangerous volcano two hundred years ago. Praise God no one has been killed on the Big Island so far."
Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino plays one of the first missionaries to arrive into Hawaii in 1821. Sorvino stars opposite Teuria Shanti Napa, Ricky Sua'ava, Malia Marquez, Michael Camp, Lehi Makisi Falepapalangi, and legendary actor John Savage.
