According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has optioned the rights for Gregory Maguire's newest fantasy novel. Marc Platt is joining the project as producer. Platt also produced Broadway's Wicked. The novel, Egg and Spoon, is set to hit stores September 6.

Egg and Spoon is about a young girl who lives with her sick mother in the impoverished Russian countryside. However, her life changes forever when a train pulls in carrying a noble family, an enormous wealth, and a girl her own age. The story will also inclue Baba Yaga, a witch from Russian folklore. According to the folklore, Baba Yaga lives in a hut that is perched on chicken legs.
Maguire is known for taking well-known stories and turning them on their heads. His most popular one is Wicked, which was turned into the hit Broadway musical and earned itself three sequels. He has also written Matchless, Mirror Mirror, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and more.
