Tribeca Film today announced it has acquired U.S. rights to director Christopher Menaul's Summer in February, starring Dominic Cooper (The Devil's Double), Dan Stevens ("Downton Abbey"), and Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty). The screenplay is written by Jonathan Smith, based on his novel of the same name.

A sweeping romance set at a bohemian artist colony on the picturesque coasts of pre-war England, Summer in February is based on the true story of painter Sir Alfred Munnings (Dominic Cooper) and his blue-blood best friend Gilbert (Dan Stevens). Born into a working-class family, Munnings rises to become one of the premiere British artists of his time, winning the affection of aristocratic beauty Florence Carter-Wood (Emily Browning). But when Gilbert falls for Florence as well, a love triangle emerges with tragic consequences.

"Christopher Menaul's irresistible period piece, with an exceptional cast and set against the idyllic backdrop of Cornish pre-war England, reverberates with the delightful eccentricity of British romance," said Tribeca Film Chief Creative Officer Geoff Gilmore.

"Summer in February is a much loved story which has touched so many hearts already and we are thrilled that it is Tribeca who will be presenting it to a whole new audience in the United States," said Producer Jeremy Cowdrey.

The film will be released beginning January 7, 2014 on cable/telco and satellite video-on-demand and digital platforms followed by a theatrical release beginning on January 17, 2014.

The deal was negotiated for Tribeca Film by Nick Savva, Vice President of Acquisitions, and Peter Rogers of uMedia on behalf of the filmmakers. The film was released in the UK by Metrodome Distribution earlier this year.

Summer in February is produced by Jeremy Cowdrey, Janette Day, Pippa Cross, Dan Stevens, and presented by CrossDay and Apart Films in association with Marwood Pictures and Speranza13 Media.
