Cal Quarterback and top 2016 NFL DRAFT prospect Jared Goff is a real gunslinger on the football field. Watch Jared as he gets a chance to transfer those skills to THE HUNT this week on Gridiron Outdoors on The Outdoor Channel when he joins his dad Jerry Goff and host Mike Pawlawski for a Hog Hunt in Central California. Tune in for all the action Sunday, April 17 at 6:00 PM.
Jared Goff had a legendary COLLEGE FOOTBALL career as quarterback over the past three seasons at Cal in the PAC-12, where he rewrote the record book. Rising from a 1-11 record as a true freshman starter to top prospect and expected first round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Jared led the Bears to their first winning season since 2011. The list of quarterbacks who played college ball at Cal is long and prestigious, including Joe Kapp, Craig Morton, Steve Bartkowski and recently Aaron Rodgers.
Jared's first hunting trip was an opportunity to strengthen an already strong bond with his dad, former major league baseball catcher Jerry Goff. "It was great to be out here with my Dad. My heart rate was going, adrenaline flowing," said Jared. The Goffs joined host Mike Pawlawski, another former star quarterback at Cal and guide and outfitter Mike Gardner at Gardner's Hoss Hogs Hunting Adventures, a premier private hunting preserve in California.
Beginning early on day one Jared and Jerry learn safe and effective handling of the Ruger American Rifle that they will use later in the field. Pawlawski and Gardner take the Goffs through breathing control, natural point of aim, and trigger control in a live range session with the Ruger American Rifle. Pawlawski compares the rhythm of a quarterbacks mechanics "...plant, turn, throw" motion to "alignment, sight control, breath control" process of an experienced shooter.
Getting into the field and on THE HUNT for hogs, Pawlawski and Gardner show Jared and Jerry the best ways to locate and track prey, based on species specific habitual patterns. The hunters wore GO Wild Camo Edge Property pattern, providing comfort all day long as temperatures rose and fell.
Jared compared the instinctive nature of THE HUNT to the traits he used in the pocket to succeed in football: "You just have to let your natural abilities take over. You can't think about it you just have to let it happen." He also recognized a situational similarity between tossing the pigskin and hunting California pigs. "In the pocket, you'll throw a ball sometimes and you'll get hit and you don't get to see it come down."
Gridiron Outdoors viewers get a unique inside the huddle perspective on Goff this week and the experience of hunting with expert hunters and guides alongside some of America's favorite athletes and entertainers every Sunday at 6:00 PM Eastern time on the Outdoor Channel.
Jared Goff was a highly rated prep recruited by a number of college programs before selecting Cal. He was starting QB for the Bears over the past three seasons. In 2015, as a true junior, Goff led the Bears to a 7-5 regular season finish, clinching Cal's first winning season since 2011. Goff surpassed his own single-season records for passing yards (4,714), touchdown passes (43) (both Pac-12 records) and total offense (4,260). After the season he announced that he would enter the 2016 NFL DRAFT and is expected to be taken early in the first round.
