Variety reports that Tony Award winner Jeremy Irons has signed on to co-star in THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY, the biopic of renown Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Dev Patel will co-star in the title role.
Irons will portray G.H. Hardy, "the English mathematician who plucked Ramanujan from obscurity in Edwardian India and installed him in Cambridge University."
Matthew Brown, who penned the screenplay based on the biography "The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan" by Robert Kanigel, will also helm the project. Edward R. Pressman and Prasa Chaudhary will producer alongside
Jim Young and Sofia Sondervan.
Praised Pressman, "I am delighted to be working with Jeremy again. Our last collaboration on 'Reversal of Fortune' earned an Oscar for Jeremy, and I could not overstate his amazing talent. We are very fortunate to be able to add an actor of such stature to our production."
Irons received the Academy Award for his portrayal of
Claus Von Bulow in "Reversal of Fortune," and nabbed the Tony for his Broadway performance in
Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing."
His other career highlights include: The French Lieutenant's Woman, in which he starred opposite
Meryl Streep; The Mission; and
David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers. Irons starred in Damage and M. Butterfly before he made pop culture history as the voice of the evil lion Scar in Disney's classic The Lion King. Irons is probably best known for his role as
Charles Ryder in the cult TV serial "Brideshead Revisited" and more recently as the eponymous Rodrigo Borgia in Showtime's epic TV drama series "The Borgias".
