According to Entertainment Weekly, Tony Dyson, the creator of Star Wars's beloved R2-D2, has passed away at the age of 68.
Dyson was commissioned to create the robot for the original 1977 film. However, Dyson's impact on the franchise lasted far longer than only the first film, given that R2-D2 was also featured in the prequel trilogy of films, as well as the most recent film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Dyson and his studio, White Horse Toy Company, contributed to a variety of films besides Star Wars, such as Superman II and Moonraker.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattered box office records upon its debut to become the cinematic event of a generation with over $926 million domestic and $2.05 billion worldwide. The epic movie will be available to own early on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on April 1, and coming home on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on April 5.
