SHOWTIME has named multiple Emmy winner Tom Fontana (Homicide: Life on the Street) as showrunner, executive producer and one of the writers on the upcoming drama series CITY ON A HILL, starring Golden Globe® winner and Emmy nominee Kevin Bacon (The Following) and Screen Actors Guild® award winner Aldis Hodge (Underground). Fontana will work closely with series creator and executive producer Chuck MacLean (Boston Strangler) on the 10-episode series premiering in 2019. Today's announcement was made by Gary Levine, President of Programming,
Showtime Networks Inc.
In his prolific career, Fontana has received 19 Emmy nominations, winning for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series in 1984 and 1986 for St. Elsewhere and in 1993 for Homicide. Most recently, Fontana received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie as executive producer forThe Wizard of Lies and this year, Paterno. In 2009, Fontana was honored with the Richard B. Jablow Award by the Writers Guild of America, which has also nominated him 12 times, with three wins for episodic drama. Fontana's credits include the critically acclaimed series Oz, Borgia, Copper, The Philanthropist, The Bedford Diaries and The Jury (all of which he created), as well as the movies Strip Search and Judas.
Based on an original idea by Academy Award® winner Ben Affleck, CITY ON A HILL is set in the early 1990s Boston, rife with violent criminals emboldened by local law enforcement agencies in which corruption and racism was the norm. In this fictional account, assistant district attorney Decourcy Ward (Hodge) arrives from Brooklyn and forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran, Jackie Rohr (Bacon). Together, they take on a family of armored car robbers from Charlestown in a case that grows to involve, and ultimately subvert, the entire criminal justice system of Boston.
Produced by SHOWTIME, CITY ON A HILL also stars Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom), Mark O'Brien (Halt and Catch Fire), Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan), Lauren E. Banks (Instinct), Amanda Clayton (Tyler Perry's If Loving You Is Wrong), Kevin Chapman (BROTHERHOOD) and Tony® Award nominee Jere Shea (Passion), with Kevin Dunn (Veep) recurring.
In addition to Fontana, CITY ON A HILL is executive produced by Affleck, Academy Award winner Matt Damon, Emmy nominee Jennifer Todd (Jason Bourne, Memento), Michael Cuesta (American Assassin), James Mangold (Logan, Walk The Line) and
BARRY Levinson (Rain Man). MacLean wrote the pilot and Cuesta directed it. Bacon serves as co-executive producer.
