Three-Part National Geographic LIVE Series Coming to The Town Hall 2/27 Image

National Geographic Live, National Geographic's touring speaker series, and The Town Hallare proud to announce Beauty and the Bizarre with Anand Varma, a National Geographic Emerging EXPLORER and Science photographer. The event will take place at 8pm on Tuesday, February 27 at The Town Hall in New York City. It is the first of three unique programs that also includes David Guttenfelder's A Rare Look: North Korea to Cuba (March 27) and Annie Griffiths' Photography without Borders (April 25).

When Anand Varma takes a photograph of a parasitic wasp consuming a caterpillar from the inside, he doesn't want to you to be disgusted. He wants you to be astonished. After all, he's devoted years of his life to perfecting his techniques to create dramatic, bizarre-and beautiful-images of the miniature world around us. In these astonishing images he reveals the secret life cycle of the honeybee, captures the lightning-fast behaviors of hummingbirds, and offers a rare glimpse at our world's small wonders.

Varma is a Science photographer who works to tell THE STORY BEHIND the Science of everything, from primate behavior and hummingbird biomechanics, to amphibian disease and forest ecology. Says Varma: "I grew up exploring the streams and wooded lots near my childhood home in Atlanta, Georgia. As a teenager, I picked up my dad's old camera on a whim and found that I could use it to feed my CURIOSITY about the natural world-and to share my adventures and discoveries with others."

Varma studied integrative biology at UC Berkeley and spent several years assisting other photographers before receiving a National Geographic Young EXPLORER grant to document the wetlands of Patagonia. He has since become a regular contributor to National Geographic as well as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer.

National Geographic Live is the live events division of National Geographic.
