After four seasons, The CW has canceled its Rachel Bilson medical drama HART OF DIXIE and its freshman series THE MESSENGERS, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Per the report, the series' switch to Friday nights didn't help in the ratings, leading to a hiatus in March after the current season premiered in January.

About Hart of Dixie:

Hart Of Dixie is from Bonanza Productions Inc., in association with Fake Empire, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Leila Gerstein ("Gossip Girl," "Eli Stone"), Josh Schwartz ("Gossip Girl," "Chuck," "The O.C."), Stephanie Savage ("Gossip Girl," "The O.C.") and Len Goldstein.

Rachel Bilson leads a stellar ensemble cast in this fish-out-of-water comedic drama about small-town living, big city attitudes and complicated love triangles. It's been nearly two years since Dr. Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) moved to BlueBell, Alabama, and shook up life in this small town. Now Zoe navigates between bad boy Wade Kinsella (Wilson Bethel) and good hearted George Tucker (Scott Porter), while Lemon Breeland (Jaime King) achieves her dream of being a business owner - even if that business is The Rammer Jammer, and her mismatched partner is Wade. Zoe's best friend and landlord, Mayor Lavon Hayes (Cress Williams), has finally gotten over Lemon, finding happiness with AnnaBeth (Kaitlyn Black), complicated by the fact that she is Lemon's best friend. And Zoe's associate, Dr. Brick Breeland (Tim Matheson), pursues love, but his daughters won't endorse his new fiancée. Zoe's love life is still a mess, and she's not sure what the future holds in store for her, but we know it will be juicy and full of fun. About The Messengers:

In the white-hot sun of the New Mexico desert, scientist Vera Buckley watches in fascination as a mysterious object plummets to Earth and explodes in a blinding flash, sending out a shock wave that briefly stops Vera's heart and panics her techie coworker, Alan Harris.

Vera is not the only one affected by the blast; she is instantly and mysteriously connected to four other strangers, who also collapse only to miraculously come back to life: Erin Calder, a young mother desperate to protect her 7-year-old daughter from an abusive ex-husband; Peter Moore, a troubled high school student who finally lashes out to end the constant bullying he can no longer endure; Raul Garcia, a federal agent looking to escape his undercover assignment in a violent Mexican drug cartel; and Joshua Silburn, Jr., a charismatic second-generation televangelist following in his father's footsteps - all awaken after the blast with extraordinary gifts, from inexplicable strength to the ability to heal others.

Most mysterious of all is the figure known only as The Man, who offers Vera the one thing she wants most in life - to be reunited with her kidnapped son - if she will help him with one morally complicated task. That task puts Vera on a collision course with nurse Rose Arvale who, after a seemingly random act of violence left her in a coma for seven years, suddenly begins to stir. As Joshua Jr. prophesied, the wheels of Revelation have begun to turn, and these five newly christened Angels of the Apocalypse may be the only hope for preventing the impending Rapture.

The series stars Shantel VanSanten ("Gang Related," "One Tree Hill") as Vera Buckley, Jon Fletcher ("City of Dreams") as Joshua Silburn, Jr., Sofia Black-D'Elia ("Betrayal," "Gossip Girl") as Erin Calder, JD Pardo ("Revolution") as Raul Garcia, Joel Courtney ("Super 8") as Peter Moore, Anna Diop ("Everybody Hates Chris") as Rose Arvale, Craig Frank ("Mixology") as Alan Harris, and Diogo Morgado ("Son of God," "Sol de Inverno") as The Man.
