NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" has delivered its biggest week in total viewers since December, while "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" has hit a nine-week high in ratings results for the week of Aug. 5-9.
Leno and Fallon enjoyed commanding margins of victory, topping their broadcast time-period competition for the week in every key ratings category - adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, plus total viewers.
Note that CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" was in rebroadcast last week while "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" excluded Thursday and Friday due to delays for golf coverage. ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" was in rebroadcast on Friday.
The Aug. 6 appearance by President Barack Obama generated "Tonight's" biggest overall audience for any night of the week since July 2012.
The telecast with the President attracted a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 or 1.430 million viewers in that category, and 4.947 million viewers overall. It's the highest 18-49 rating for the show since Monday, June 10 and the biggest overall audience since Friday, July 27, 2012, the night of the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics.
These Aug. 6 results top President Obama's prior appearance on Oct. 24, 2012 (1.355 million adults 18-49, 4.600 million viewers overall).
For the week, Leno's average of 1.121 million adult 18-49 viewers was "Tonight's" highest since June 10-14 and his 3.821 million viewers overall is the show's best since Dec. 17-21, 2012, the week of last fall's "Voice" finale. Fallon delivered his biggest overall audience (1.764 million) since June 3-7.
Leno has now delivered bigger 18-49 audiences than "Late Show" for the last 38 weeks in a row and topped "Kimmel" for 28 of their 31 head-to-head weeks. In total viewers, Leno has out-delivered "Late Show" for 42 weeks in a row and "Kimmel" for 31 of 31 weeks.
Fallon has now generated bigger 18-49 audiences than "Late Late Show" for 43 of the last 44 weeks and prevailed in total viewers for 40 of the last 42 weeks. Versus "Nightline" in their head-to-head half-hour, Fallon has out-delivered the
