Thugs the Musical follows the adventures of a struggling and delusional actor, his doomed musical production, and the misfit group of actors he has assembled as his cast. After years of auditioning but not being considered "black enough", Michael Gardner decides to create a musical. His mission: to present a gritty, authentic depiction of life in the ghetto through the fabulous world of musical theater. The film, shot as a faux documentary, chronicles the making of the play from rehearsals through its disastrous opening weekend and features such musical numbers as "Who's That Keepin' It Real?" "Drive-By," and "Oh No She Di-in't".
The cast features comedian Kevin Avery, Tony Award nominee David Alan Grier (The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, Race, Chocolate News, In Living Color), Margaret Cho (I'm The One That I Want, Notorious C.H.O., Drop Dead Diva), Rachel True (Half & Half, The Craft, The Drew Carey Show, Half Baked), Baron Vaughn (Fairly Legal, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) and Prodigal Sunn from the Wu Tang Clan. Thugs the Musical is written by Avery, who also composed all of the original music with Alex Burke.
