THE HOBBIT Drops 57% at Weekend Box Office

While still holding on to the number one spot at this weekend's box office, THE HOBBIT, Peter Jackson's much-anticipated film saw a 57% drop off in its second week in theaters, according to EW.com. The film earned an estimated $36.7 million, bringing its ten-day gross to $149.9 million.

In other box office news, it was a disappointing weekend for Tom Cruise's 'Jack Reacher' from Paramount and Judd Apatow's comedy 'This is 40'. 'Reacher', based on the character created by Lee Child, opened in second place with $15.6 million, while 'This is 40' brought in $12 million to take third place.

Other disappointing openings included 'The Guilt Trip', starring Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogen and Disney Pixar's Monsters, Inc. 3D. Neither film reached the top five in box office earnings.

The Top-Five money makers of the weekend are as follows:

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - $36.7 million
2. Jack Reacher - $15.6 million
3. This Is 40 - $12 million
4. The Rise of the Guardians - $5.9 million
5. Lincoln - $5.6 million
