TVGuide reports that an overwhelming influx of users of HBO Go who tuned in to watch the finale of HBO's TRUE DETECTIVES caused the service to crash, preventing many fans from seeing the conclusion of the popular freshman drama series.
Tweeted the service Sunday evening: "Due to overwhelmingly popular demand for #TrueDetective, we've been made aware of an issue affecting some users. Please try again soon."
Because many viewers continued to have trouble logging in after the episode aired at 10 pm, some are questioning whether the problem may have been intentional on the part of HBO, in order to to discourage HBO Go users from sharing their log-in information with non-subscribers.
True Detective is written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga. It centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), whose lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana.
The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.
