Steven Spielberg to Helm Film Adaptation of Roald Dahl's THE BFG

Variety writes that Roald Dahl's THE BFG is headed to the big screen with Steven Spielberg at the helm.

The movie adaptation of THE BFG, which stands for "Big Friendly Giant", will be penned by Melissa Mathison (E.T.) Dreamworks has the rights.

Dahl's THE BFG was first published in 1982 and spawned an animated film in 1989, as well as a stage version.

The story centers on a little girl named Sophie, who runs into a giant blowing a dream into someone's room on his nighttime stroll. He catches her and whisks her away to Giant Country, where the BFG reveals he is the world's only good giant.

Spielberg is aiming for a 2016 release.

Academy Award winner Spielberg is also working on the fifth Indiana Jones movie. Among his past directing credits are Lincoln, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, War of the Worlds, Catch Me If You Can, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, The Color Purple, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws and more.
