In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, SMASH creator and executive producer Steven Spielberg spoke about the popular NBC musical drama. "Here's what's great about Smash," he asserts, " - it's not a procedural, it's not medical, it's not cops, it's not legal eagles, it isn't a sitcom. So it does defy what is commercial and popular today."

He continues, "But that's what [NBC Entertainment chairman] Bob Greenblatt wanted to do when he came in and was offered NBC. He wanted to take his cable sensibility and bring it to network television and I think he's succeeding admirably."

The 'Lincoln' director revealed that he does incorporate viewer feedback when making executive decisions about the show. "I don't follow [the social media reaction] personally but I'm told everything," said the film-maker. "So I certainly knew about it, I just don't follow it."

He adds, "I have a choice - I can either watch all the dailies or I can follow the social media. I can't do both."

The second season of SMASH will include a list of high-profile guest stars, including Nikki Blonsky of Hairspray, Jesse L. Martin, Sean Hayes and Bernadette Peters. The second season is set for a February 5 premiere on NBC.

"Smash" is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire - to be a Broadway star. The series stars Emmy Award winner Debra Messing ("Will & Grace"), Oscar winner Anjelica Huston ("Prizzi's Honor"), Jack Davenport ("Pirates of the Caribbean" films), Tony Award winner Christian Borle ("Peter and the Starcatcher"), Katharine McPhee ("American Idol"), Megan Hilty ("9 to 5: The Musical"), Tony Award nominee Jeremy Jordan ("Newsies"),Andy Mientus("Spring Awakening"), Leslie OdomJr. ("Leap of Faith") and Krysta Rodriguez ("Spring Awakening").
