The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Sigourney Weaver will be returning for the next three AVATAR sequels -- but not as her character 'Grace Augustine', who passed away in the first film.

"...she's playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films," director James Cameron told THR. "We're both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration."

Weaver joins returning actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang in the cast.

The first AVATAR film hit the big screen in 2009, written and directed by Cameron and starring Worthington, Saldana, Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel David Moore, Giovanni Ribisi and Weaver.

The movie was set in the mid-22nd century, when humans are mining a precious mineral called unobtanium on Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi - a humanoidspecies indigenous to Pandora. The film's title refers to a genetically engineered Na'vi body with the mind of a remotely located human, and is used to interact with the natives of Pandora.

Cameron is planning on going into production on the second, third and fourth films simultaneously. The sequels are scheduled for release in December 2016, December 2017, and December 2018.

Weaver's other upcoming big screen projects include Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes. She recently starred in Vamps, The Cold Light of Day, The Cabin in the Woods and Red Lights, as well as the TV mini-series Political Animals. Weaver last appeared on Broadway in 2013 in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. She has also starred onstage in Sex and Longing, Hurlyburly and The Constant Wife.
