Summit Entertainment's film adaptation of "Letters to Juliet" will star "Mamma Mia!" darling Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave, Gael Garcia Bernal and Franco Nero. The film will be directed by Gary Winick and is produced by Mark Canton, Ellen Barkin and Caroline Kaplan. Production on the movie will begin June 25th in Italy.
"Letters to Juliet" is based on a book by Lise and Ceil Friedman about the letters written by the lovelorn to star-crossed lover Juliet Capulet. After Shakespeare's writings of the ill-fated Juliet, the mythical character has become a saint to the lovelorn, who frequently write letters asking for her advice or sympathy. The film features a script penned by Jose Rivera and Tim Sullivan.
According to trade paper Variety, the story follows a couple (Seyfried and Garcia) who take a trip to Italy and receive a note meant for Juliet written by a woman (Redgrave) searching for a young man who romanced her during a long-ago vacation in Italy. The young woman scours Tuscany to find the older woman's long-lost love (Nero).
Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony Award winner Redgrave and Nero starred together in the 1967 film adaptation of Lerner and Lowe's "Camelot," appearing as Guenevere and Lancelot, respectively. "Letters to Juliet" will be a case of Art imitating life for the pair; they began a romance around the time of Camelot, with a son born shortly thereafter. After decades apart, the two reunited and married in 2006.Videos
