The Adrienne Shelly Foundation (ASF) was named after Adrienne Shelly, a very talented actor/writer/director (WAITRESS) who was murdered November 1, 2006. The Foundation was created the following month with a simple mission: Supporting Women Filmmakers. It serves as an advocate for female artists, championing them as the precious independent spirits they are, helping them get their work created, produced and onto the public stage. Since its inception, ASF has awarded over 60 production grants to very talented filmmakers across the globe.

Its partnerships include The Sundance Institute, American Film Institute, Women in Film, IFP, Tribeca Film Institute, Columbia University, Boston University, Rooftop Films, The Nantucket Film Festival, Athena Film Festival and The Horizon Award. One of its grant recipients, Cynthia Wade, won an Oscar in 2008 for her documentary FREEHELD, which ASF helped fund. Other notable recipients include Sarah Gertrude Shapiro (UNREAL), Dee Rees (PARIAH), Ana Lily Amirpour (A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT), Cherien Dabis (AMREEKA) and Annie Sundberg/Ricki Stern (Joan Rivers: A PIECE OF WORK).
