Lakeshore Records will release the Scary Movie V - Original Motion Picture Score digitally today, May 14, 2013. The album features original music by James L. Venable (Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back).
"This score was my third opportunity to take a forensic look at the music from many of my favorite Scary Movies," said Venable, who also composed the music for Scary Movie 3 and 4. "I had a lot of fun trying to figure out a way to compose original music that supported the comedy and action of the Scary Movie V while maintaining the music essence of the film that was being featured in the comedy."
James L. Venable is no stranger to writing music for comedy films. His first feature length film was Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back the 2001 follow-up to Kevin Smith's Clerks. A frequent collaborator of Smith, Venable also worked on the short-lived TV series Clerks, and composed the music for Clerks II, Jersey Girl, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. In addition to the films Scary Movie 3 and 4, Kickin It Old Skool, and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, Venable's credits include several animated television series including The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack.
The latest installment of the Scary Movie franchise includes send ups of Paranormal Activity, Mama, Sinister, The Evil Dead, Inception, Black Swan and pop culture featuring Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Katt Williams, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Simon Rex, Jerry O'Connell, Sarah Hyland, Katrina Bowden, Tyler Posey, Shad Moss aka Bow Wow, Kate Walsh, Heather Locklear,
Mac Miller and Mike Tyson.
Scary Movie V is directed by Malcolm Lee who teamed up and worked side by side with legendary comedy director David Zucker (Airplane, The Naked Gun franchises). Zucker wrote and directed Scary Movie 3 and 4 and also co-wrote and produced Scary Movie V.
The Scary Movie franchise, which lampoons the greatest in horror and genre fare, has grossed over $800 million worldwide.
"My goal was to have the music be the 'straight man' to whatever lunacy was happening on the screen," said Venable. Did Producer David Zucker feel the same way? When asked what directions Zucker gave to him, Venable answered, "Good Luck. We're all counting on you."
Dimension Films presents Scary Movie V in theaters on April 12, 2013. The Scary Movie V - Original Motion Picture Score will be available digitally through all major providers on May 14, 2013.
