1991 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, two-time Major Champion and renowned putting guru Dave Stockton invites David FEHERTY to his home in Redlands, Calif., for a wide-ranging interview on tonight's new episode of Fehertyairing at 9 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.
Shot at his home and the adjacent Redlands Country Club, Stockton - who compiled 10 PGA TOUR and 14 Champions Tour victories in addition to captaining the U.S. Ryder Cup team to victory in 1991 - is widely recognized as one of the top putting instructors in the game, having helped the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, and Michelle Wie, among many others. Stockton discusses how he became one of the preeminent putting instructors in the game; his experiences as a Ryder Cup captain (Feherty was a member of the European Ryder Cup Team in 1991); opinions on the "Task Force" the PGA of America has put into place for selecting U.S. Ryder Cup captains; and why Larry Nelson still deserves a chance to captain the United States in the Ryder Cup.
A native of Arrowhead, Calif., Stockton - who had the opportunity to compete on the PGA TOUR alongside names like Snead, Hogan, and Palmer - also shares his thoughts on the anchored putting stroke; whether he deserves to be in the World Golf Hall of Fame; memorable moments of his career, including playing alongside Al Geiberger when he became the first player to shoot 59 in PGA TOUR competition; the Stockton family; and his alma mater, the University of Southern California. Stockton also gives FEHERTY some putting tips, and reveals the secrets on the green that have contributed to the successes of some of the best players in the world.
Select Stockton Quotes from the Interview:
On U.S. Ryder Cup Captains:
"We can't figure out why Larry Nelson was never a captain. He led men in Vietnam, he comes back and learns golf and wins three majors, but he is never considered."
"I think Azinger in 2008 in Valhalla did the best job of anybody that has ever been a captain. This pod system that he formulated let him sit above the fray."
On the U.S. Ryder Cup Task Force:
"Now we are on equal ground basically with the Europeans I think because the players are saying what's important."
On the World Golf Hall of Fame:
Whether I get inducted or not, I'm certainly not campaigning for it. I know it drives my sons and my wife nuts. I kind of hope that if it does happen that I'd like to still be here to find out about it. I feel like I have given back to the game. I've always taught and I'm perfectly happy with where I am."
