Rooftop Films and Brooklyn Army Terminal are joining forces to bring outdoor movies to the Sunset Park community with three nights of screenings (dates and details below). Taking place on one of the Terminal's historic piers looking out onto the Upper Bay, the events will include live music, food and drink from local vendors, filmmaker Q&As, and additional special enhancements. All Rooftop Films events at Brooklyn Army Terminal are free with an RSVP and will feature films specially selected for the neighborhood community. The first event - a special screening of of En el Séptimo Día on 6/23, which was shot just blocks from Brooklyn Army Terminal and stars Sunset Park residents - was a huge success with about 700 people in attendance. Select photos of that screening can be found here.
"Rooftop Films was founded on the idea that the location and community in which a film is screened can greatly alter and augment the experience of watching that film, and that cultural events in unlikely places can bring together neighborhoods in uniquely meaningful ways," said Dan Nuxoll, Artistic Director of Rooftop Films. "That is why we are so excited to be bringing films for the first time to Brooklyn Army Terminal and to the Sunset Park community. We believe that every region of New York City deserves to experience communal cultural gatherings like these, and we are very grateful to the NYCEDC for providing support to make sure that events like these reach some of those communities that are traditionally underserved by cultural institutions."
"Celebrating its 100th year, the Brooklyn Army Terminal is home to city's most innovative manufacturers - making everything from sustainable furniture to salt water taffy to 3D printed clothing," said James Patchett, President and CEO of New York City Economic Development Corporation. "Our partnership with Rooftop Films will add to the vibrancy on campus, giving the community another reason to visit our growing job
HUB in Sunset Park.
