On Friday, Academy Award nominated director Darren Aronofsky releases the Biblically-inspired epic NOAH.

The film tells the tale of the prophet who withstood the great flood from a new psychological perspective. Russell Crowe stars in the title role, alongside Jennifer Connelly, Saoirse Ronan, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins and more.

What did the critics have to say?

Kenneth Turan | Los Angeles Times

"As much a fantasia inspired by the Old Testament as a literal retelling of that tale, Noah manages to blend the expected with the unexpected and does it with so much gusto and cinematic energy you won't want to divert your eyes from the screen." Read full review here.

A.O. Scott | New York Times

"Mr. Aronofsky's earnest, uneven, intermittently powerful film, is both a psychological case study and a parable of hubris and humility." Read full review here.

Claudia Puig | USA Today

"NOAH is no by-the-book Bible story. Think of it as a visually mesmerizing sci-fi adventure saga loosely based on the book of Genesis." Read full review here.

Peter Travers | Rolling Stone

"Pick your gospel: the Scriptures or rock & roll. Both figure into director Darren Aronofsky's NOAH, a biblical epic that follows no rules except its creator's teeming imagination." Read full review here.

Mick LaSalle | San Francisco Chronicle

"NOAH is no silly action blockbuster with a biblical pretext. Rather, it's the product of writer-director Darren Aronofsky's vigorous engagement with the biblical story and what it might mean in our time." Read full review here.

Ann Hornaday | Washington Post

"Old Testament fury has rarely come to such spectacularly fearsome life than in NOAH, Darren Aronofsky's audacious adaptation of one of the Bible's best-known but still enigmatic chapters." Read full review here.

Michael Phillips | Chicago Tribune

"Neither fish nor fowl, neither foul nor inspiring, director and co-writer Darren Aronofsky's strange and often rich new movie Noah has enough actual filmmaking to its name to deserve better handling than a plainly nervous Paramount Pictures has given it." Read full review here.

Todd McCarthy | Hollywood Reporter

"Darren Aronofsky wrestles one of scripture's most primal stories to the ground and extracts something vital and audacious, while also pushing some aggressive environmentalism, in NOAH." Read full review here.
