Rafael Martinez has been PROMOTED to Executive Director of Business Affairs, Creative for BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.), effective immediately. The announcement was made today by Randall McMillan, Vice President, Business Affairs, Creative & Licensing, BMI, to whom Martinez reports.
Martinez will continue to focus on the business affairs needs of BMI's Creative team, including the negotiation and drafting of songwriter and composer affiliation and advance agreements. He is also charged with identifying emerging music trends and talent, with the goal of building upon BMI's market share across all music genres and platforms.
"Rafael has demonstrated great success in helping BMI's management team to make smart deals, while maintaining and growing the robust relationships that we have with our affiliates and their representatives," said McMillan. "This promotion is well-deserved, and we look forward to Rafael's continued work to help expand BMI's unmatched roster of established and developing talent."
Martinez began working at BMI in 2014 in the company's legal department as Director, Business Affairs. Prior to that, he held several positions at Sony Music Entertainment over five years of increasing responsibility, culminating with Associate Director, Business & Legal Affairs. In that capacity, he oversaw the business affairs of over 70 Sony Music Entertainment artists, including Beyoncé, Pitbull, Kings of Leon and Christina Aguilera.
Martinez holds a law degree from the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law and received a BA from New York University. He resides in New York City.
