It was announced today that Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "House of Cards") has signed on to executive produce the series "Femme," based on the short film of the same name that is currently on the festival circuit. Brosnahan also executive produced the short, which hits queer streaming service, Revry, on September 21st.
Directed by Alden Peters and written by Corey Camperchioli, "Femme" stars Camperchioli, Jesus 'Aja' Rivera ("RuPaul's Drag Race"), Stephanie Hsu ("The Path"), Johnny Sibilly ("Pose"), and Derek Klena ("Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"). The short film was produced by Benno Rosenwald of Mooki Entertainment, while Johan Matton and Linnea Larsdotter of Changing Film Productions co-produced the project.
"Femme" centers on Carson (Camperchioli), a gay twenty-something looking for love on all the wrong apps. After being rejected by an online hookup for being too "femme," Carson embarks on a hilarious journey towards self-discovery and acceptance by way of a manic existential crisis and a drag queen fairy godmother. Set in Hell's Kitchen, the epicenter of New York City gay life, Carson must confront his own notions of masculinity and gender performance within the LGBTQ community and beyond.
After premiering at Wicked Queer, The Boston LGBT Film Festival in March, "Femme" was awarded "Best Coming of Age Short." It has since screened at more than 20 festivals, including Outfest in Los Angeles, Frameline Film Festival, Inside Out Film Festival, and Out Web Fest, where it was awarded "Best Comedy." "Femme" is also slated to screen at 11 festivals in Fall 2018.
"After the beautifully positive response to Femme the film, I am thrilled to continue the Femme journey with the fiercely talented Corey Camperchioli," says 2018 Emmy nominee Brosnahan. "His singular and powerful voice is an important part of a new generation of barrier breaking storytellers and I'm proud to collaborate with him."
Casting, production dates, and release details for the series will be released in the coming months.
Brosnahan is repped by CAA, Brillstein Partners and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams.
