The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced today the launch of JUNO TV's latest project, Rising. The new online content series, funded by Ontario Creates, takes a unique look at the process of creating music and the role it plays in overcoming challenges. Each episode celebrates rising Canadian musicians and their personal stories of connection, soul-searching and growth. The first episode in the series will be available on November 13, 2018 at 10 a.m. ET and will live on JUNO Awards Youtube Channel.
"The series will give viewers a deeper look at artists' profound connection to their music, what they've learned about themselves throughout their journey, and the sacrifices they make to follow their dreams," said Allan Reid, President and CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts. "The debut episode follows Once A Tree: two strangers living fascinatingly parallel lives who bonded through music."
"We are thrilled to be a part of this new project by JUNO TV and to have a platform to share our story," said Jayli Wolf, Once A Tree. "Our lyrics are informed by our experience renouncing our faith and losing our identities. Together, we have defied odds and found each other through the process."
The JUNO TV docuseries supports CARAS' commitment to aid in the development of emerging artists through mentorship and development programs. "We are extremely excited to bring Rising to JUNO TV. This project was a first for our team and we are honoured to be able to share Hayden and Jayli's powerful story," said Desiree Deleau, Rising Co-Director, alongside Avery Stedman. "Our goal with this series is to showcase artists on a deeper level and inspire those with complex paths, to pursue their dreams passionately."
Episode One: Once A Tree
Rising kicks-off with the intimate story of Toronto-based electro-pop music duo, Once A Tree. The couple was recently profiled in Rolling Stone as new artists to watch for their debut album Phoenix and their 2017 summer single "Breakdown".
On the search for a new beginning, Jayli and Hayden moved to Toronto and found a new life together. "For You", the ballad featured in the first episode, reflects the fragility of human connection and transformation. Once A Tree's thought-provoking Rising episode can be viewed here.
Stay tuned for the next installation, featuring one of Canada's best-kept SECRETS in rap, Night Lovell.
